Description
Book Description: London John Murray 1860. One of the Most Important Scientific Books of the Nineteenth Century DARWIN, Charles. On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. London: John Murray, 1860. The 2nd issue (with "fifth thousand" on title-page and three quotations on the half-title page. Octavo Folding lithographed diagram by W. West, facing p. 117. Original green ripple-grained cloth with covers decoratively stamped in blind and spine decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt. Extremities of spine with some wear. No restoration done on this beauty! This is original and untouched. Overall a very good copy. Please see photos for details. You may not see it, but there is wear to the corners. One of the most important scientific works of the last two centuries, On the Origin of Species was (and still is) also one of the most controversial. The book caused an uproar immediately upon its publication, and many early copies were burned in protest of its author’s ideas. The 1859 first edition is out of most of most people's price range ($65,000 - $130,000.00) and this 1860 issue may soon be also.  Once our current recession is over, expect the few 1860 books to skyrocket.  Again, this beauty is untouched - no restoration whatsoever. If you had a little tlc done, it would be worth more than I'm selling it for. Just to make it even easier, shipping is free! Good luck and be sure to check out my other auctions.  In a few days I'll be putting more books on Ebay: 1st edition of Hardy's 'TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES' - signed!,  Christopher Isherwood's 'GOODBYE TO BERLIN',  perhaps some Dicken's Christmas Stories or Pickwick Papers, Faulkner, signed Steinbecks, letters and signatures from people like famous Dalton gang member Emmett Dalton, Darwin, an assortment of presidents .......we'll see what time permits.
