Description
COX & BUDGE BOOKS (UK)   RARE FIRST EDITIONS OF LEWIS CARROLL’S ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND (1866) & THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS (1872).   Offered here are first editions of two of the most seminal books in children’s literature, Alice in Wonderland and the sequel, Through the Looking Glass, housed within a specially made slip case.   1. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland   Author: Lewis Carroll, with forty-two illustrations by John Tenniel.   Title: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland   Publisher & Printing Details: Macmillan and Co., London, 1866. First trade edition, second issue, original red cloth binding with the spine rebacked and the red cloth laid over. This edition has the light blue endpapers and the inverted S on the last line of the contents page but page 30 is page 30 and not “3”. All pages’ edges gilt.   Collation: ffep, half-title, tissue-guarded frontis, title page, poem (4), contents, 192pp, rfep.   About the Book: On an ordinary summer's afternoon, Alice tumbles down a hole and an extraordinary adventure begins. In a strange world with even stranger characters, she meets a rabbit with a pocket watch, joins a Mad Hatter's Tea Party, and plays croquet with the Queen! Lost in this fantasy land, Alice finds herself growing more and more curious by the minute.   Condition: A worn but still very decent copy of this title. The red cloth binding is a little grubby in places and the gilt decorated roundels to front and back are faded, as is the gilt lettering to spine. The front board’s outer edge is a little frayed in places. There is light binder's glue residue to the endpapers where the spine was rebacked.   Internally, the binding is holding fast with no pages loose but is a little weakened in places but the inner hinges have been strengthened when the spine was rebacked. The pages themselves have occasional light foxing and look a little worn in places. The contents page, pages 58, 63, and 123 have light but noticeable creasing to the edges.   There is a previous owner’s bookplate to the front pastedown (Paul Latham) and a previous owner’s neat hand-written name to the half title (M A Watson, Binfield, 1866).   2. Through the Looking-Glass   Author: Lewis Carroll, with fifty illustrations by John Tenniel.   Title: Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There   Publisher & Printing Details: Macmillan and Co., London, 1872. First edition, original red cloth binding. The Jabberwocky poem on page 21 (line 2) states "wade" instead of "wabe" - correct for the first edition. All pages’ edges gilt.   Collation: ffep,half-title, dramatis personae, chess board, tissue guarded frontis, titple page, poem (3), contents, 224pp, 1 publisher’s ad, refp.   Also, tipped-in to the half-title is the fairly scarce small printed note from Lewis Carroll "To All Child-Readers of Alice's Adventures In Wonderland". About the Book: When Alice steps through the looking glass she enters a world of chess pieces and nursery-rhyme characters who behave very oddly. Humpty Dumpty, the Lion and the Unicorn, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the White Knight and the Red Queen - like everything through the looking glass - are "contrariwise".   Condition: This copy has the original red cloth boards with gilt roundels to front and rear and gilt lettering to spine, the gilt is faded. The rear hinge is frayed for about 3cm and there is a small water stain to the rear board. The pages are clean (with the half-title and frontis having a little foxing and creasing) and the text block binding is also secure. The front and rear hinges are fairly heavily cracked meaning the binding at the hinges is weakened and the main body of the book sags a little when held. There is a previous owner’s bookplate to the front pastedown (the same as Alice in Wonderland) and a previous owner’s name in ink to the endpaper.   A lovely collection of these two classic first editions. It's not a perfect set but still very collectable and two books which will never lose their value. They are housed in a custom made slipcase, which has two leather spines and red boards to match the cloth of the books.  The slipcase has a little scuffing and marking but is in good sound condition. Additionally, each book is in a folded case within the slipcase.   Payment: Payment can be made either through paypal, cheque, or bank transfer. Postage:  Free postage is offered worldwide on these books. They will be sent by courier, which will include tracking details and insurance. Check out my other items!
